Ejection Fraction

Meaning

Ejection fraction (EF) is a vital clinical measure of cardiac performance, quantifying the percentage of blood volume ejected from the left ventricle with each systolic contraction. While primarily a core cardiovascular metric, its assessment is critical in hormonal health because endocrine dysfunctions, such as severe thyroid disorders or chronic cortisol excess, can significantly impair myocardial contractility and overall cardiac output. A reduced EF is a key indicator of systolic heart failure, which can be secondary to various hormonal cardiomyopathies.
