Eicosanoids

Meaning

Eicosanoids are a class of potent lipid mediators derived primarily from 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids, notably arachidonic acid. These molecules function as local hormones, acting near their site of synthesis to regulate a vast array of cellular and physiological processes. They are not stored but are synthesized rapidly on demand in response to various stimuli, exerting transient yet powerful effects.
