eGFR

Meaning

eGFR, or Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate, is a calculated measure used in clinical practice to assess the overall function of the kidneys, representing the volume of blood filtered by the glomeruli per unit of time. This metric is a primary indicator for screening, diagnosing, and staging Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and is normalized to a standard body surface area. A consistently low eGFR value signifies impaired renal clearance of metabolic waste products.
