Effort Valuation Mechanism

Meaning

The Effort Valuation Mechanism is the neuroeconomic process by which the brain calculates the perceived cost—in terms of physical or cognitive effort—against the anticipated value of a potential reward or outcome. This calculation is a critical determinant of an individual’s willingness to initiate and sustain goal-directed actions, such as adhering to a demanding exercise or dietary regimen. A dysregulated mechanism can manifest as profound apathy or procrastination, even when the benefits are intellectually understood.
