Edema Mechanism

Meaning

The Edema Mechanism refers to the precise set of pathophysiological processes that culminate in the abnormal, palpable accumulation of fluid within the interstitial space, which is the area between cells and outside of the blood vessels. Clinically, understanding this mechanism is essential for differential diagnosis, as edema can be a manifestation of various underlying conditions, including cardiac, renal, hepatic, or endocrine dysfunction. It represents a failure of the normal homeostatic forces that govern transcapillary fluid exchange.
