Ectopic Lipid Accumulation

Meaning

Ectopic lipid accumulation refers to the abnormal deposition of triglycerides and other lipid species within non-adipose tissues, such as the liver, skeletal muscle, pancreas, and heart. This phenomenon represents a deviation from the body’s usual lipid storage mechanisms, where fat is primarily contained within adipose tissue. When lipids accumulate in these atypical locations, they can interfere with the normal cellular processes and physiological functions of the affected organs.
