Ectopic Lipid Accumulation

Meaning

Ectopic lipid accumulation describes the pathological deposition of triglycerides and other lipid metabolites within non-adipose tissues, such as the liver, skeletal muscle, heart, and pancreas, where fat storage is not physiologically intended. This inappropriate lipid buildup is a significant clinical marker and contributor to cellular dysfunction, often preceding insulin resistance and lipotoxicity. It represents a critical disruption in systemic energy partitioning and metabolic health, indicating a failure of appropriate adipose storage capacity.
