Early Life Programming

Meaning

Early Life Programming is a fundamental biological concept describing how environmental exposures and maternal conditions during critical periods of fetal and postnatal development permanently alter the structure and function of physiological systems. This process, also termed developmental programming, establishes lifelong setpoints for endocrine axes, metabolic pathways, and immune responses. These early-life adaptations, particularly in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal or HPA axis, significantly influence an individual’s susceptibility to chronic diseases and stress-related disorders in adulthood.
