Dutasteride Effects

Meaning

The pharmacological consequences resulting from the administration of dutasteride, a medication classified as a dual 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. This drug effectively blocks both Type 1 and Type 2 isoforms of the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into the more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Clinically, the primary effects include a significant reduction in serum and tissue DHT levels, leading to a decrease in prostate volume and treatment of androgenic alopecia. Patients should be meticulously counseled on the potential for related sexual and hormonal side effects prior to therapy initiation.
