Drug Transporters

Meaning

Specialized membrane-bound proteins located on cell surfaces, including those in the liver, kidney, intestine, and blood-brain barrier, that actively move pharmaceutical agents and endogenous compounds across biological membranes. These proteins play a crucial role in the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of therapeutic agents. They can either facilitate uptake into cells or promote efflux out of cells.
