DPP-4 Inhibitor

Meaning

A class of pharmaceutical agents utilized primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, known as Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 inhibitors. These oral medications function by selectively blocking the action of the DPP-4 enzyme within the human body. The clinical effect is an enhancement of the body’s own incretin hormones, which are essential for glucose homeostasis. This therapeutic strategy helps to lower blood glucose concentrations in a glucose-dependent manner, minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia.
