DPP-4

Meaning

DPP-4, or Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4, is a ubiquitous enzyme found on the surface of various cells throughout the body, including those in the kidney, liver, intestine, and pancreatic islets. Its fundamental biological function involves the enzymatic degradation of specific peptide hormones, most notably the incretins Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP). This precise action renders these hormones inactive by cleaving their N-terminal amino acids.
