DOHaD

Meaning

DOHaD is the acronym for the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease, a foundational scientific paradigm positing that environmental and nutritional factors during critical periods of early life, including gestation and infancy, permanently program an individual’s physiology. This programming sets the long-term trajectory for health, linking early-life conditions to the later susceptibility to chronic non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. It is a critical lens for preventative medicine.
