DMPA Fertility Delay

Meaning

DMPA fertility delay describes the period of time following the discontinuation of Depo-Provera, or Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate, before a woman successfully conceives. This injectable contraceptive works by suppressing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus. While the drug’s contraceptive efficacy is fully reversible, the return to pre-treatment fertility levels is not immediate upon cessation. This interval represents the time required for the body to metabolize the residual depot formulation and for the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis to fully resume normal ovulatory function.
