Diurnal Cortisol Gradient

Meaning

The Diurnal Cortisol Gradient refers to the characteristic, predictable pattern of cortisol secretion throughout a 24-hour period, which is essential for maintaining circadian rhythm and metabolic homeostasis. Under optimal conditions, cortisol levels are highest shortly after waking, exhibiting the cortisol awakening response, and then gradually decline throughout the day, reaching their nadir around midnight. Disruptions to this gradient, such as a flattened curve or an evening elevation, are clinically associated with chronic stress, HPA axis dysregulation, and various health detriments.
