Distal Nephron

Meaning

The distal nephron represents the terminal segments of the renal tubule, comprising the distal convoluted tubule and the collecting duct system, which plays a crucial role in the kidney’s homeostatic function. This segment is the final determinant of the body’s fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance before urine excretion. Hormonal regulation is exceptionally dense here, as it is the primary target for mineralocorticoids like aldosterone and the antidiuretic hormone, vasopressin. Its proper function is essential for maintaining blood pressure and overall circulatory volume, linking renal physiology directly to the endocrine system.
