DIO2 Gene

Meaning

The DIO2 gene encodes the enzyme Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase, a critical component in the peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormones. This enzyme is responsible for converting the relatively inactive prohormone thyroxine (T4) into the biologically potent triiodothyronine (T3) within target tissues. Genetic variations, specifically single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DIO2, are clinically significant as they can affect an individual’s ability to activate thyroid hormone efficiently.
