DIO2 Gene

Meaning

The DIO2 gene, or Deiodinase Type 2 gene, provides the genetic blueprint for producing the type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase enzyme. This enzyme plays a pivotal role in thyroid hormone metabolism by converting the relatively inactive prohormone thyroxine (T4) into the biologically active hormone triiodothyronine (T3) within various tissues. Its function is critical for maintaining adequate intracellular T3 levels, which are essential for cellular processes and overall metabolic regulation.
