The DIO genes, or deiodinase genes, encode a family of selenoproteins responsible for the precise regulation of thyroid hormone activation and inactivation within various tissues. These enzymes are crucial for converting the prohormone thyroxine, T4, into the biologically active triiodothyronine, T3, or into inactive metabolites like reverse T3, rT3, thereby controlling cellular thyroid status.
