Diluents

Meaning

Diluents are inert, liquid or solid substances added to a pharmaceutical preparation to reduce the concentration of the active drug, increase the bulk of a tablet, or render a solid drug soluble in a liquid form for administration. In compounding and clinical practice, a diluent ensures accurate dosing, improves stability, and facilitates the safe and effective delivery of the active pharmaceutical ingredient. The selection of a suitable diluent is a critical step in formulation science to avoid compatibility issues or adverse patient reactions. Common examples include sterile water, saline, or various oils for injectables.
