Dihydrotestosterone Production

Meaning

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) production is the biochemical process of converting the androgen testosterone into its significantly more potent metabolite, DHT, within specific target tissues. This conversion is catalyzed by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and is critical for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics and certain physiological functions in both sexes. Excessive or deficient production is clinically implicated in conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia, male pattern baldness, and ambiguous genitalia.
