Dihydrotestosterone

Meaning

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgen hormone, a derivative of testosterone, which is synthesized primarily in target tissues like the prostate, hair follicles, and skin. DHT is significantly more potent than its precursor, binding to the androgen receptor with higher affinity and stability. This powerful hormone is crucial for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics during puberty, yet in adult life, excessive levels can contribute to clinical issues such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness.
