Digital Rectal Examination

Meaning

A common, essential clinical procedure involving the insertion of a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to manually assess the condition of the lower rectum, anal canal, and surrounding structures, most notably the prostate gland in males. This tactile examination allows for the detection of masses, structural abnormalities, and changes in size or texture that may indicate pathology. It remains a standard component of preventative and diagnostic health screening.
