Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)

Meaning

The Digital Rectal Exam, commonly abbreviated as DRE, is a routine clinical procedure where a healthcare provider manually inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to palpate the lower rectal wall and surrounding organs. In men, this examination is specifically performed to assess the size, shape, and consistency of the prostate gland. The DRE is a foundational component of screening for prostatic conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer.
