Digital Rectal Exam

Meaning

The Digital Rectal Exam, or DRE, is a fundamental physical assessment technique involving insertion of a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to palpate adjacent structures. This procedure allows for tactile evaluation of organs such as the prostate gland in males, the uterus and ovaries in females, and the rectal wall itself. It serves as a preliminary diagnostic tool for identifying abnormalities in the lower gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts.
