Digital Rectal Exam

Meaning

The Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) is a fundamental clinical procedure where a healthcare provider manually assesses the lower rectum, anal canal, and adjacent organs, most notably the prostate gland in males. This tactile examination is performed using a gloved, lubricated finger inserted into the rectum. The DRE is a screening tool utilized to detect physical abnormalities such as masses, nodules, enlargement, or tenderness, providing immediate, valuable information about the anatomical status of these structures.
