Diethylstilbestrol (DES)

Meaning

Diethylstilbestrol, commonly known as DES, is a synthetic non-steroidal estrogen that was widely prescribed to pregnant women between 1938 and 1971, primarily to prevent miscarriage and other pregnancy complications. This compound was later identified as a potent endocrine disruptor, causing significant and often delayed adverse health effects in individuals exposed in utero, leading to its discontinuation for such applications.
