Dietary Phytoestrogens

Meaning

Dietary Phytoestrogens are a group of naturally occurring, plant-derived compounds, such as isoflavones and lignans, that possess a molecular structure sufficiently similar to human estradiol to interact with estrogen receptors. These compounds are consumed through the diet in foods like legumes, whole grains, and seeds, exerting weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects within the human body. Their biological activity is highly dependent on gut microbiome metabolism and the individual’s endogenous hormonal status.
