Dietary Phytoestrogens

Meaning

Dietary phytoestrogens are naturally occurring plant-derived compounds that possess structural and functional similarities to mammalian estrogens, enabling them to interact with estrogen receptors in the human body. These compounds are categorized into major classes such as isoflavones, commonly found in soy products; lignans, abundant in flaxseeds and whole grains; and coumestans, present in clover and sprouts. Their presence in various plant-based foods makes them a regular component of many diets.
