Dietary Lignans

Meaning

Dietary Lignans are a category of naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in various plant-based foods, most notably flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and certain whole grains. These substances are classified as phytoestrogens because their metabolites exhibit a weak but meaningful ability to interact with the human endocrine system. Upon consumption, these compounds are transformed by the gut microbiota into enterolignans, which can subtly modulate systemic hormonal balance. They are recognized for their potential role in supporting cardiovascular and hormonal health.
