Dietary Lignans

Meaning

Dietary lignans are a class of naturally occurring polyphenolic compounds found in various plant foods, recognized as phytoestrogens due to their structural similarity to mammalian estrogens. Upon ingestion, these plant precursors undergo biotransformation by the gut microbiota, converting into active mammalian lignans, primarily enterodiol and enterolactone, which are then absorbed into systemic circulation.
