Dietary Ketosis

Meaning

Dietary ketosis is a metabolic state intentionally induced by consuming a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, leading to the liver producing ketone bodies—beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone—from fatty acid breakdown. These ketones then serve as an alternative, highly efficient fuel source for the brain and peripheral tissues when glucose availability is restricted. This state is clinically utilized for its effects on improving insulin sensitivity, reducing chronic inflammation, and providing stable energy for neurological function. It represents a fundamental shift in the body’s fuel substrate preference.
