Dietary Inflammatory Index

Meaning

The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) is a scientifically derived, composite metric used to quantify the overall inflammatory potential of an individual’s long-term dietary pattern based on the intake of specific food components. A positive, higher DII score indicates a predominantly pro-inflammatory dietary load, whereas a lower or negative score suggests a protective, anti-inflammatory pattern. Clinicians utilize this objective score to assess the chronic inflammatory burden contributed by nutritional choices, which significantly impacts metabolic and endocrine homeostasis.
