Diastolic Hypertension

Meaning

Diastolic Hypertension is a specific classification of high blood pressure characterized by a sustained elevation of the diastolic pressure reading, which is the pressure measured in the arteries when the heart is completely relaxed between beats. Clinically, this condition is defined by a diastolic blood pressure that is consistently 80 mmHg or higher, regardless of whether the systolic pressure is also elevated. Persistent elevation of this lower number indicates increased peripheral vascular resistance and represents a significant, quantifiable cardiovascular risk factor.
