Diastereomers

Meaning

Diastereomers are a specific class of stereoisomers that possess the same molecular formula and sequence of bonded atoms but differ in the spatial arrangement of their atoms, importantly, they are not mirror images of one another. Unlike enantiomers, diastereomers have distinct physical and chemical properties, including different melting points, boiling points, and chromatographic behavior. In the realm of hormonal therapeutics, the subtle structural difference can translate into profound differences in biological activity and safety profile.
