Diabetic Retinopathy

Meaning

Diabetic Retinopathy is a progressive microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus, characterized by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, known as the retina. This condition is a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness among working-age adults, directly correlating with the duration and degree of hyperglycemia and metabolic dysregulation. Chronic exposure to elevated blood glucose compromises the structural and functional integrity of the retinal vasculature. Early detection is crucial for preventing irreversible vision loss.
