Diabetic Nephropathy

Meaning

Diabetic nephropathy is a progressive clinical syndrome characterized by structural and functional deterioration of the kidneys, specifically the glomeruli, which occurs as a long-term complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Clinically, it is defined by persistent albuminuria and a gradual decline in the glomerular filtration rate. This condition represents a significant microvascular complication of chronic hyperglycemia and is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease.
