Diabetic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Diabetic Hypogonadism is a clinical condition characterized by deficient sex hormone production, typically testosterone in men or estrogen in women, occurring as a complication or comorbidity of diabetes mellitus. This endocrine dysfunction is often observed in men with type 2 diabetes and is associated with symptoms such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and decreased muscle mass. The underlying metabolic derangement of diabetes, including chronic hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, is thought to disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Recognizing and treating this specific form of hypogonadism is essential for improving quality of life and potentially mitigating certain diabetes-related complications.
