DHT Conversion

Meaning

DHT Conversion is the critical biochemical process where the androgen precursor testosterone is metabolized into the more potent androgen, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This conversion is catalyzed by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, primarily occurring in peripheral target tissues such as the prostate, hair follicles, and skin. DHT is significantly more potent than testosterone at the androgen receptor, making this conversion a major determinant of androgenic effects in specific tissues. Clinically, modulation of this pathway is a common therapeutic strategy for conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia.
