DHEA Decline Curve

Meaning

The DHEA Decline Curve is the characteristic, age-related graphical representation illustrating the gradual and progressive reduction in the circulating levels of Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated form, DHEA-S, which are the most abundant adrenal steroids. Production of DHEA peaks in early adulthood and then steadily diminishes across the lifespan, a process known as adrenopause. This decline is clinically significant as DHEA acts as a crucial precursor for sex steroid synthesis and exerts numerous independent effects on immune and cognitive function.
