Dermal Papilla

Meaning

The dermal papilla is a specialized, cone-shaped structure of connective tissue located at the base of the hair follicle, deeply embedded within the dermis layer of the skin. This critical cluster of mesenchymal cells is highly vascularized and innervated, serving as the regulatory center for hair growth and cycling. It plays an indispensable role in signaling to the surrounding epithelial cells of the hair matrix, thereby initiating and sustaining the anagen (growth) phase.
