Delta Wave Sleep

Meaning

Delta Wave Sleep, also clinically termed Slow-Wave Sleep (SWS) or N3, represents the deepest stage of non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep, characterized by high-amplitude, low-frequency electrical activity in the brain, ranging from 0.5 to 4 Hertz. This physiological state is paramount for physical restoration, metabolic stability, and the clearance of cerebral waste products. The quantity and integrity of Delta wave activity serve as a robust clinical biomarker for sleep depth and restorative capacity. Deficiency in this stage is a common indicator of age-related sleep decline.
