Deiodinase Type 3

Meaning

Deiodinase Type 3 (D3) is an enzyme primarily inactivating thyroid hormones. It removes an iodine atom from the inner ring of thyroxine (T4) to produce reverse T3 (rT3), and from triiodothyronine (T3) to yield diiodothyronine (T2). This action reduces active hormone availability.
