Deiodinase Type 2

Meaning

Deiodinase Type 2, often abbreviated as D2 or DIO2, is a crucial enzyme responsible for converting the relatively inactive thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) into its biologically potent form, triiodothyronine (T3). This intracellular enzymatic process involves the removal of an iodine atom from the outer ring of T4, facilitating T3 availability at a cellular level.
