Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEAS)

Meaning

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEAS) is the sulfated ester of the steroid hormone dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), representing the most abundant circulating adrenal androgen precursor in the human body. As a prohormone, DHEAS exhibits relatively weak intrinsic androgenic activity, but it functions as a large systemic reservoir that can be converted into more potent sex steroids, including testosterone and estrogens, within peripheral tissues. Clinical measurement of DHEAS provides an invaluable and reliable assessment of adrenal gland function and overall androgen reserve.
