Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)

Meaning

Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is the most abundant circulating steroid precursor in the human body, produced predominantly by the adrenal glands. Often classified as a prohormone, DHEA is the substrate for the local, cell-specific synthesis of more potent sex steroids, including testosterone and estradiol, in peripheral tissues. Its circulating levels naturally peak in early adulthood and decline progressively with advancing age.
