Degarelix

Meaning

Degarelix is a synthetic peptide drug classified as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist, used clinically to rapidly suppress the production of sex hormones, primarily testosterone in men. Unlike GnRH agonists, which initially cause a surge in hormone levels, Degarelix directly and immediately blocks the GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. This action leads to a swift and sustained reduction in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), thereby reducing gonadal steroidogenesis.
