Default Mode Network Attenuation

Meaning

Default Mode Network Attenuation is the therapeutic objective of measurably reducing the baseline level of intrinsic activity and the functional connectivity within the Default Mode Network (DMN), a major brain system active during self-referential thought, rumination, and unfocused mind-wandering. Excessive or pathologically persistent DMN activity is clinically correlated with increased anxiety, chronic rumination, and a significant impairment in the ability to effectively focus on external, goal-directed tasks. Successful attenuation of this network is a primary goal for enhancing cognitive performance and promoting a state of durable, present-moment awareness.
