Deep Sleep Latency

Meaning

Deep sleep latency is a specific chronometric measure in sleep medicine, quantifying the duration of time from the onset of total sleep to the beginning of the first sustained period of slow-wave sleep (SWS), also known as deep sleep. This metric serves as a clinical indicator of sleep quality and the efficiency of the transition into the most physiologically restorative phase. A prolonged latency suggests underlying neuroendocrine or behavioral dysregulation that impedes optimal nocturnal restoration.
