Deconjugation

Meaning

Deconjugation refers to the biochemical process where a previously conjugated molecule, typically a steroid hormone or xenobiotic, has its attached polar group, such as a glucuronide or sulfate, enzymatically removed. This cleavage restores the molecule to its unconjugated, often more biologically active, form. This critical enzymatic action allows for the potential re-activation or recirculation of various compounds within the body’s systems.
