Decidualization

Meaning

Decidualization is the essential, highly organized transformation of the endometrial lining of the uterus that occurs during the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle in preparation for potential embryo implantation. This process involves the differentiation of endometrial stromal cells into large, secretory decidual cells, fundamentally altering the tissue’s structure and biochemical environment. Successful decidualization is an absolute prerequisite for a receptive uterus and the establishment of a viable pregnancy. This physiological change is intricately orchestrated by ovarian steroid hormones.
