Deamidation

Meaning

Deamidation is a non-enzymatic or enzymatic post-translational modification in which an amide functional group is removed from an amino acid side chain, typically from asparagine or glutamine residues, converting them into aspartic acid or glutamic acid, respectively. This chemical change alters the protein’s charge, conformation, and stability, potentially affecting its biological function, half-life, and interaction with other molecules. It is a key process in protein aging and degradation.
