Deamidation

Meaning

Deamidation refers to a non-enzymatic chemical reaction involving the removal of an amide group from specific amino acid residues, primarily asparagine and glutamine, within proteins or peptides. This process results in the conversion of asparagine to aspartic acid or isoaspartic acid, and glutamine to glutamic acid or isoglutamic acid, thereby altering the protein’s charge, conformation, and ultimately its biological function. The change can significantly impact the stability and activity of vital biomolecules.
