DEA Scheduling

Meaning

The administrative process by which the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies controlled substances into five distinct schedules, I through V, based on their accepted medical use, potential for abuse, and psychological or physical dependence potential. This classification dictates the stringent regulatory requirements for the manufacture, distribution, prescription, and storage of these medications. Understanding DEA scheduling is critical in hormonal health, as many anabolic steroids and certain pain medications fall under these federal controls. Schedule I substances have the highest abuse potential and no accepted medical use, while Schedule V have the lowest.
