Data Safety Monitoring Board

Meaning

An independent group of experts, typically composed of clinicians, biostatisticians, and ethicists, who periodically review accumulating data from ongoing clinical trials to ensure the safety of participants and the validity of the study. The board’s role is critical in clinical research, particularly in the domain of hormonal therapies, where potential benefits must be continuously weighed against risks. They are empowered to recommend the continuation, modification, or premature termination of a trial based on predetermined safety and efficacy endpoints. Their oversight ensures patient welfare remains the highest priority.
