Data Linkage Attack

Meaning

A Data Linkage Attack is a sophisticated privacy breach where seemingly anonymous or de-identified personal health data, such as hormonal biomarker ranges or specific lifestyle patterns, is cross-referenced with external public or commercial databases. The objective is to re-identify the individual associated with the health record, thereby compromising the privacy assurances provided by the wellness provider. This attack exploits common demographic markers or unique biometric data points that remain in the de-identified set.
